Lasers have been used in dentistry for decades with a proven track record. In our practice, Laser Dentistry is an integral part of the everyday care we provide for our patients. In general, there are two types of lasers used for laser dentistry: soft tissue lasers and hard tissue lasers. In Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry, we utilise both. There are many situations in dentistry where lasers are very useful.
Sensitive teeth
Cold or even hot and cold tooth sensitivity can be treated very successfully with lasers. Instant results are produced with short (90 seconds) application of laser to the affected tooth. The results are very rewarding for both the dentist and patient. Each case must be assessed individually. Sometimes tooth sensitivity is a sign of more complicated problems and may need further treatment.
Cold sores and other skin lesions
Our soft tissue laser can accelerate the healing of cold sores and mouth ulcers. Also, we have treated issues like skin tags and small fat deposits on skin effortlessly. For large lesions around the lips and face, we refer patients to our plastic surgeon colleagues who consult on the same floor.
Loose teeth
We have had some brilliant results treating loose teeth and large pockets around teeth with lasers. The laser removes the dead tissues around the loose teeth and promotes attachment of the gum to the tooth. Every case needs to be treated individually and referral to gum specialist may be necessary in severe cases.
Treatment of dental disease
Hard tissue lasers can be used for the removal of decay and preparation of cavities for fillings. Though this is a rather time taking the method of doing fillings, in some instances it can be beneficial.
