Teeth with Veneers

Porcelain dental veneers, also known as, tooth veneers or dental veneers, or teeth with veneers, are a modern aesthetic treatment to fix problems such as chipswear and tear and severe discolouration of teeth.

Tooth or dental veneers differ to tooth crowns in a way that they only cover the front of the tooth and not its entire circumference.

Tooth veneers have improved dramatically over the years. Newer tooth veneer systems use porcelain materials that are very similar to tooth enamel. This means that they do not stand out as foreign objects and blend in with the rest of the smile perfectly. Modern tooth veneer systems also do not require teeth to be cut extensively for their placement. Tooth enamel is very precious and needs to be preserved as much as possible and modern systems allow us to achieve this goal.

Veneers in Dentistry

The use of veneers in dentistry is a common procedure performed at Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry. Every case is assessed based on its own merit. We consider, using your input, as to what is the most cost-effective and minimally invasive procedure we can provide and what is the minimum number of tooth veneers we can place to produce maximum effect. A mock-up treatment is often performed to assess this and also to see if you are comfortable and happy with the estimated end result.

Once the treatment is approved, we try to duplicate the mock-up as accurately as possible using modern computerised technology. Usually, no injections are given as teeth are often left intact and no cutting is required depending on the case. Please note that bond between the veneer and the tooth is strongest when the tooth veneer is placed on healthy enamel. This is another reason why we keep the cutting of the teeth to an absolute minimum. The longevity of ceramic (porcelain) tooth veneers is very much dependent on home care. As tooth grinding can fracture veneers, wearing a nightguard is often advised.

Dental Veneers – What is involved?

Traditionally dental veneers require cutting of teeth (so the new veneers can be attached to the existing tooth), and fabrication of temporary veneers while the porcelain veneers are made. This often requires injections to numb the teeth, multiple visits and normally a minimum of 1-2 weeks between visits.

This is NOT how dental veneers are done in Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry.

Dental Veneers, Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry way

At Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry, with careful case selection, we provide the veneers with no or minimal cutting of the tooth enamel. Why? Because your tooth enamel gives your teeth strength and rigidity, your tooth can become weaker once cut.

To know how the new veneers will work on your teeth, a “mockup” is performed first. This is to give you and the cosmetic dentist the necessary information about your teeth, lips and face and how the new veneers will look and function. Once the mock-up is approved, a record of the mock-up is taken to ensure it can be replicated.

Teeth are then prepared for impressions so that porcelain veneers can be made. All the sharp edges and bulging sections of the tooth are polished back. As we are not removing the enamel, no injections are needed unless an old filling needs to be removed.

Digital Smile Design Adelaide

Our high-quality, natural-looking porcelain dental veneers are designed by computer technology using the blueprint of the performed mock-up. This is called Digital Smile Design. They are then fabricated, polished and perfected. This process takes a few days for large cases or can be done while you wait in a single tooth case.

The veneers are tried in, observed and adjusted if needed. The colour can be modified using a variety of shades of cement (glue) to make sure it blends in with the rest of the teeth seamlessly.
It is only when both you and the dentist are happy with the results, and you have given the final OK that the veneers are placed permanently.

We pride ourselves in the naturally beautiful results that we create. Often other dental professionals won’t be able to tell from our pictures which tooth has the veneer. Results though dramatic, are so subtle that patients’ close friends even are often unable to pick what is changed.

Our Process

At Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry every case is assessed based on its own merit. We consider, using your input, as to what is the most cost-effective and minimally invasive procedure we can provide and what is the minimum number of tooth veneers we can place to produce maximum effect. A mock-up treatment is often performed to assess this and also to see if you are comfortable and happy with the estimated end result. Here’s how the process takes place.

pv step1

Consultation

A discussion about what you would like to achieve is the first step. Your options are then discussed based on your individual circumstances.

pv step2

Mock Up

When choosing veneers, a mockup of the finished results is performed directly on your teeth. We look at it together and perfect it to the point that meets both the aesthetic and functional needs.

pv step4

Digital Mould & Onsite Fabrication

A digital impression (mould) is then taken for making the veneers based on the performed mockup. Minimum roughening of the outer layer of enamel (not visible by naked eye) is required.

pv step5

Smile!

The veneers are cemented on after the final observation and necessary adjustments. we often ask you to return for a review appointment. Nightguards are sometimes needed to protect your teeth and your new veneers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental veneers are generally not covered by dental insurance as they are usually classified as an elective cosmetic dentistry treatment. However, it is essential to review the specific details of your dental insurance policy to determine whether dental veneers are included in your coverage.

This can only be determined by the individual circumstances of each patient. Porcelain maintains its lustre and does not stain. Provided that regular six monthly check-ups are attended, Porcelain Veneers can last for 10 – 15 years.

Porcelain veneers do not wear down with general eating and grinding.

At Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry we aim to have no or minimal tooth reduction. With the majority of cases, tooth reduction is not necessary. However, certain situations do require a small amount of reduction. Either way, if tooth reduction is required, it is very minimal.

Porcelain is the closest looking material to a natural tooth. Porcelain veneers maintain their shine and appearance just like a tooth. Shade matching allows a likeness that only a true professional will be able to tell the difference.

Porcelain dental veneers are a permanent restoration, and their life span is approximately 10 – 15 years. We offer regular six monthly check-ups and an optional night guard – to protect your teeth from grinding in the night. If chips or fractures happen porcelain veneers can be replaced easily. If no tooth reduction has been required, the veneers can be removed, and your teeth returned to how they were prior to the veneers being placed before a new veneer is placed.

The material that we use for the veneers has a quality of taking and reflecting the surrounding colours making the veneers match the rest of the teeth seamlessly. If 8 – 10 teeth are being veneered, you can choose the colour porcelain you want and for example go for a lighter shade.

The cement that is used is extremely strong and prevents the veneer from falling off. Chips and breakages are extremely rare. Nevertheless, if a veneer does chip, it can be replaced.

The procedure can vary depending on all of the treatment recommended. Porcelain veneers take a few days from impressions to cementation, or be done while you wait if we have only one veneer to do. One of our benefits is that we digitally manufacture our veneers in-house and have full control over the design and manufacturing process, meaning we will have you smiling sooner!
